What is a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can assess and provide guidance for mental, emotional, and behavioural conditions. Our private psychiatrists in Ireland provide ADHD assessments, Autism assessments, and other mental health assessments.

After getting to know you and your concerns, you and your psychiatrist will work together to create a personalised care plan that’s right for you. For example, this patient’s story about bipolar disorder shows how a thorough assessment helped guide treatment,  support, and positive life changes.

An assessment may lead to:

  • Further evaluation through specialised mental health assessments
  • Autism assessments or ADHD assessments when relevant
  • Recommendations for counselling or therapeutic approaches suited to your needs
  • Practical strategies to support your overall wellbeing
  • Collaboration with other health professionals, such as your GP or therapist, when helpful.

Your first psychiatry appointment — whether online or in person — is an important step toward better understanding your mental health and finding the right support. Progress can take time, so it’s important to be patient with yourself throughout the process..

Our psychiatrists can refer and liaise with the entire BetterCare team to ensure that any future appointments are arranged smoothly, efficiently, and without stress.

"I’ve been using BetterCares Adult Psychiatry Service for a few months now, and the difference it has made in my life is incredible. The psychiatrist was understanding, professional, and truly listened to my concerns. I felt supported from the very first session. The remote appointments are much easier for me, and the care has been consistently top-quality. I finally feel like I’m on the right path—highly recommend to anyone seeking compassionate, expert mental health support"

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. They assess and provide guidance for mental health conditions and support your overall care. Psychiatrists focus on developing and overseeing a personalised care plan, coordinating with other healthcare professionals when appropriate. They typically do not provide weekly talk therapy sessions.

A psychologist holds a doctoral degree (PhD), usually in clinical or counselling psychology, with extensive training in research and evidence-based therapy. Psychologists primarily support mental health through structured psychotherapy (talk therapy), helping clients develop coping strategies, emotional insight, and practical approaches to managing challenges.

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, trouble sleeping, thoughts of suicide, or hearing “voices.”

Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

Remember, there’s no shame in having or seeking help for a mental health condition. The sooner you seek help and treatment, the sooner you’ll feel better.

A psychiatric treatment plan includes:

  • Assessments & Diagnosis: Comprehensive mental health assessments, including ADHD assessments, Autism assessments, and other evaluations by a private psychiatrist in Ireland.
  • Ongoing Support: Regular follow-ups with your private psychiatrist in Ireland, available online or in person.
  • Personalised Care Planning: Tailored guidance and strategies to support your mental health, combining therapy options and professional recommendations suited to your needs.
  • Medical History Review: Consideration of your previous healthcare records and GP notes to ensure informed care.
  • GP Collaboration: Coordination with your primary care physician for a holistic approach to wellbeing.
  • Internal Referrals within BetterCare: Access to psychology, occupational therapy, and psychotherapy services for integrated support.
  • External Referrals When Necessary: Guidance to specialist services, including child psychiatry or a pediatric psychiatrist, if appropriate.

During your initial consultation, your psychiatrist in Ireland will take time to understand your experiences, what brings you to seek support, and the challenges you may be facing.

After learning about your needs, you and your psychiatrist will work together to develop a personalised care plan. This plan may include a combination of therapies, ADHD assessments, Autism assessments, or other evidence-based approaches tailored to your individual circumstances, preferences, and goals.

Your personalised care plan may involve:

  • Further evaluation through specialised mental health assessments
  • Recommendations for counselling or therapy options
  • Guidance on lifestyle strategies and wellbeing practices
  • Collaboration with other health professionals, such as your GP or therapist, when appropriate
